CITY OF NORWALK, CT
THE DOWNTOWN DISTRICT SCHOOLHOUSE – 1826

Oxygen Design partnered with historian and curator Daryn Reyman-Lock, PhD, to develop interpretive exhibit panels and educational banners for the 1820 Downtown District Schoolhouse, part of Mill Hill Historic Park in Norwalk, Connecticut. This historic site offers insight into 19th-century town life, with the schoolhouse serving as a key artifact in understanding rural American education.

The exhibit content and design focused on capturing the atmosphere and instructional philosophies of one-room schoolhouses, highlighting how students of varying ages learned together under a single teacher. Through visual storytelling and period-accurate graphics, Oxygen Design helped bring to life the daily routines, teaching methods, and community role of schoolhouses during this era.

This project not only enhanced the visitor experience with engaging, accessible content, but also supported Mill Hill Historic Park’s mission to educate the public on the evolution of American education and life in 19th-century Connecticut.
