SELF AND THE WORLD: EXPERIENCING PHOTOGRAPHY IN 19TH CENTURY NORWALK

Oxygen Design collaborated with curator Elizabeth Avery to design interpretive panels and exhibit banners for a photography-focused exhibition at the Norwalk Historical Society Museum in Norwalk, Connecticut. This exhibit explored the transformative role of photography in 19th-century American society, emphasizing its influence on personal identity, cultural documentation, and the spread of visual communication.

Through compelling visual storytelling, Oxygen Design crafted exhibit materials that helped visitors understand how photographic technology shaped everyday life—from portraiture and family albums to journalism and social change. The design approach blended historical imagery with modern interpretive techniques to engage diverse audiences.

This project supported the museum’s educational mission by providing clear, accessible, and historically rich content that shed light on the social, cultural, and technological shifts brought about by early photography.
