INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE
CITY OF AVON, CT
DISTRICT NO. 3 SCHOOLHOUSE
As an extension of the exhibit From Northington to Nod to Avon, exterior interpretive signage was developed to highlight two pivotal elements in Avon’s history: the District No. 3 Schoolhouse and the Farmington Canal.
The signage offers passersby and museum visitors contextual background on the 1823 schoolhouse, which served the town for over a century before becoming the home of the Avon Historical Society. A companion panel explores the construction and influence of the Farmington Canal, emphasizing its role in shaping Avon’s economy and development in the 19th century.
In collaboration with curator Daryn Reyman-Lock, PhD of Sawdust and Strata, I designed signage that could stand alone for outdoor viewers while visually tying into the museum’s broader interpretive identity. Each panel balanced concise historical narrative with archival images and thematic design elements, helping modern audiences connect with the legacy of public education and early transportation infrastructure in Avon.
The signage now enhances the museum’s exterior presence, making history accessible even before visitors step through the door.
